Fountain and Water Feature Hydraulics: Calculations and Equipment Selection
Plumbing Design
Project Overview
Two fountains in an administrative complex: one at ground level with 88.67 m² of surface, 0.30 m average depth and 26.6 m³ volume, and one in Basement 1 with 31.2 m², 0.25 m depth and 7.8 m³. We calculated circulation, filtration, make-up and drainage, selected the pumps, filters and nozzle counts, and reconciled the results against the bill of quantities in a reply to review comments dated 15 July 2026.
The Challenge
- Two fountains at different levels (ground +100.000, basement +94.900) with different pipe routes and sleeves
- Reconciling calculations with the BOQ after review comments
- Sizing circulation and filtration for different volumes at a one-hour turnover
Our Scope
- Circulation: 26.6 m³/h for the ground fountain (two filters of about 580 mm) and 7.8 m³/h for Basement 1 (one filter of about 450 mm)
- Circulation pumps: 13.3 m³/h at 19.7 m (2 duty + 1 standby) for ground and 7.8 m³/h at 19.7 m (1 + 1) for the basement
- Display pumps: 39.2 m³/h at 15.7 m for ground and 18.9 m³/h at 14.4 m for the basement
- Make-up for evaporation: 3.41 m³/h (32 mm tie-in) and 1.77 m³/h (25 mm)
- Main drains: 8 and 3 per the Egyptian code and ASPE, and 36 jet nozzles of 4.5 L/min
- Section and level drawings for both fountains with UPVC pipes from 50 to 160 mm
Solution & Results
Technical Highlights
- Volume, turnover, filtration and 10-minute backwash calculations aligned with manufacturer data
- Chemical dosing: 100 L acid and chlorine tanks with diaphragm pumps
- Calculations showed the GRP tanks listed in the BOQ were not required
Deliverables
- Ground fountain calculation file
- Basement 1 fountain calculation file
- Section sketches and details for both fountains
- Comparison sheet: calculated vs BOQ
- Referenced sand filter and nozzle data sheets
